Leaders 2014-2022

Here we have collected information about the previous program period which ran between 2014-2022.

Country and city in balance

Leader is a development method for rural areas that the EU introduced back in 1991. The method is based on local participation, commitment and action – simply on the idea that development best happens through those who actually live and work in the area: residents, associations, companies and organizations.

The basis for the work is a local strategy that is developed in dialogue with people in the area. Here in our leader area – which includes Ale, Lilla Edet, parts of Trollhättan and Vänersborg as well as the Gothenburg districts of Norra Hisingen, Angered and Östra Gothenburg – the vision is: ”Country and city in balance through creative hubs – for inclusive, co-creative and sustainable development.”

To achieve this, the seven basic principles of the Leader method are used. It is about letting development grow from below, with the support of a local action group (LAG) where non-profit, private and public sectors collaborate. The projects should contribute to the common strategy, while also being innovative and daring to try new things. Along the way, networks and collaborations are created that open up new perspectives and produce results that last over time.

”Evaluating Leader is not just about counting indicators, but about capturing stories, processes and effects that are often difficult to measure.” Lotta Åberg, Coompanion Fyrbodal

Read our evaluation of Leader with a focus on the urban-rural perspective 2014–2025:

Wide toolbox

Here we have compiled the projects and some of the fantastic results that emerged during the 2014–2022 programming period. This period was characterised by the so-called multi-fund system, where several different EU funds could work together within Leader. In addition to the agricultural fund, we also had the opportunity to work with projects financed through both the European Social Fund and the European Regional Development Fund. Together, this provided a broader toolbox for local development, where different needs and ideas could be met in new ways.

Implemented sub-projects / micro-support

During the program period, it was also possible to apply for so-called sub-projects (now more like micro-support). Applying for micro-support meant a smaller project support, but with easier administration and faster decisions. It was us at Leader Längs Göta Älv who ran projects within different focus areas and there was a specific pot of money that was distributed to different sub-projects.

These smaller project grants became very popular, as they became a complement to the larger Leader projects. For those who did not need or want to start a larger project. These smaller grants can also be applied for in the current program period, for organizations that are active within Leader Göta älv & Säveån.

BENGT OLSSON, CHAIRMAN LEADER ALONG THE GÖTA RIVER

”"In 2014, a new period of activity began, which was named Leader Along the Göta River. That period will now end, and I have been chairman for the longest time in this period.".

At the end of this period, I can feel a sense of pride and joy that I have been able to participate and influence so many good projects to be implemented with EU grants. I am especially happy that towards the end of my term, as chairman, we introduced our sub-projects. These slightly smaller grants, economically speaking, gave many associations the opportunity to start up activities that they would not otherwise have had the opportunity to do.

"It is from the associations that the ideas should come and we on the board should assess the viability of the idea. I think we have succeeded in that. Thank you for allowing me to be involved in this activity."”
