Intercultural guides in Bergsjön

Purpose of the project Intercultural guides in Bergsjön was to develop new forms of meeting and promote cooperation between different immigrant associations in northeastern Gothenburg, using culture as a tool. The starting point was to strengthen dialogue both within and between generations, break isolation and segregation and create shared cultural experiences. The idea was that each association would appoint its own ”intercultural guide” who, with the support of the project, would be trained in cultural and event production.

The project carried out a series of workshops that led to a joint cultural gala at Kulturhuset Bergsjön, where the associations produced a larger event together.

Target group were members of the five participating associations, but also the general public in Bergsjön and the rest of Gothenburg. The project was aimed at both young and adults, and offered an opportunity to participate in something new, creative and community-building.

Results:
The project's goal of creating new forms of intercultural collaboration was fulfilled. Six new networks were created and a strong collaboration with Kulturhuset Bergsjön was established. The event on April 10, 2024 attracted around 150 visitors – more than expected – and became a successful example of association-driven cultural production. A new cultural activity has been established with the potential to develop further.

”The associations have learned important lessons and developed many good ideas about how collaborations can continue to develop and become permanent.”

Post-project activities:
The collaboration between the associations and Kulturhuset Bergsjön continues, and more actors are expected to join. The project has inspired new initiatives, including participation in local festivals such as the Tellus Festival. An application to the Swedish Heritage Fund for a three-year follow-up project based on these experiences is planned for the summer of 2024. The project has thus laid the foundation for long-term sustainable and inclusive cultural activities.
